Congratulations to Sandra Darden, art teacher at King’s Fork Middle School, who was named the 2018 State Middle Division Art Educator Award from the Virginia Art Education Association.

Earning state-wide recognition as the top middle school art educator in Virginia, Darden was applauded for her leadership with the VAEA, her contributions as an advocate for the visual arts in Suffolk and around the state, and her impact on student artists. The state honorees will now be considered for the Southeastern U.S. award, who will then compete for the national award.

Darden has chaired the school division’s art teachers for 14 years, served as regional president for the VAEA for four years and the VAEA middle division director for two years, and has served as the national teacher advisor for the publication Scholastic Art.  She was selected as Suffolk Public Schools’ Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2015.  In SPS, she created the elementary gifted & talented art framework and co-wrote the K-8 art curriculum.
