Superintendent Search: Board Wants Input

The Suffolk School Board has started the process of hiring a new Superintendent by seeking community input on characteristics that are important to stakeholders. 

Timeline for Superintendent Search

  • Monday, June 24 - Survey deadline

  • Tuesday, June 25 - Public hearing … 7 p.m. at King's Fork High School
    • NOTE:  Due to technical matters, this hearing will not be videotaped or live streamed.

  • Wednesday, June 26 — School Board special called meeting to establish qualifications in a Superintendent … 7 p.m. at City Hall
    • NOTE:  This meeting will be videotaped for later posting and/or live streamed, unless technical issues.

  • Thursday, June 27 — School Board to provide qualifications to the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA), the organization managing the national search process

  • July 1 to August 2 — Superintendent application process open

  • Wednesday, August 7 — School Board to meet with VSBA, which would go into closed session to discuss specific candidates … 11 a.m. at the College and Career Academy at Pruden.

  • August/September — Anticipated first interviews with Superintendent candidates

SURVEY NOW CLOSED:  The Board has created a survey related to Superintendent criteria, which is available now at  The survey link is posted on the school division’s website, school websites, and staff portal.  Paper copies of the survey are also available at the School Administrative Offices (100 N. Main St.) and at each school.

“We want to make sure we include and involve as many stakeholders as possible in this process,” said School Board Chair Phyllis Byrum.  “This is the number one priority for the Suffolk School Board and we will work diligently to find the next leader of the school division.” 

The public survey will be available until June 24.
